In cases where we can’t save a tooth, or the tooth is threatening the wellbeing of the surrounding teeth, we will perform a tooth extraction.

At Diamond Dental Care, we know that the thought of a tooth extraction can be a worrying and even scary one for many patients. With our patient-centred approach, calm and highly experienced dentists, and warm and welcoming team, there’s absolutely no need to worry, however. There are two types of tooth extraction; a ‘simple’ extraction and a ‘surgical’ extraction.

What is a ‘simple’ extraction?

A simple extraction is performed when the tooth being removed is visible above the gum line. In such a case, we’re able to simply remove the tooth from the socket by gently taking it out with a pair of forceps.

What is a ‘surgical’ extraction?

Surgical extractions are used in more complex cases, such as when a tooth is impacted below the gum line or is broken – this could be the result of an injury or accident. During a surgical extraction, you are placed under general anaesthetic and in some cases, it may take place at a hospital.

Why might I need a tooth extraction?

There are a number of situations in which a tooth extraction might be deemed necessary. These include:

  • Damage or decay to a tooth that is beyond repair
  • A loose tooth that cannot be restored or repaired
  • Impacted or infected wisdom teeth
  • An overcrowded mouth
  • Infection

Does it hurt?

Whether you receive a surgical or simple extraction, you will first be administered with anaesthetic, so you don’t feel anything while the treatment is happening and to ensure you’re comfortable throughout.

Will I need to replace my extracted tooth?

This will vary from patient to patient and will depend on why your tooth was in need of extraction in the first place. For example, teeth that are removed due to overcrowding will not be replaced. In other situations, we may well recommend replacing an extracted tooth, as in most cases, missing teeth can lead to further health problems in the future.
