At Diamond Dental Care, we know that gum care is paramount when it comes to the overall health of the mouth. Our specialist team means that we’re able to provide preventive care alongside treatment in instances of gum disease, gingivitis, and more advanced periodontitis. With our focus on preventive care, the team will always do everything they can to prevent gum disease from developing – this includes regular check-ups and dental hygiene appointments. But when cases of gum disease become more advanced, and in need of more specialist treatment, we’re able to provide this in practice.
Gingivitis is another name given to gum disease. It occurs when a build-up of plaque on the teeth is left untreated, allowing the bacteria to travel into the gums and infect them there. It often causes some pain in the patient, as well as bleeding gums, redness, and some inflammation.
Gingivitis is fairly easy to treat at this point, as well as to prevent. Our team here will perform a thorough cleaning and advise patients on how to adapt their oral health routine at home so that they are preventing gingivitis from occurring again.
Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease which occurs when gingivitis is left untreated. In these cases, the bacteria present in the gums travel into the ligaments and bones of the mouth, weakening these support structures and leading to loosening teeth and even the loss of teeth in some cases. Patients with periodontitis often also experience a lot of pain in the area, as well as increased sensitivity, especially when eating or drinking certain food and beverages.
Our treatment plan will vary according to how advanced the disease is. In most cases, we’ll start with non-surgical options such as scale and root planning, but we may have to move on to surgical treatments such as pocket reduction.
At Diamond Dental Care we can also perform crown lengthening for the treatment of ‘gummy smiles’, along with root resection and regeneration surgery to help counteract and treat receding gums.
