Inlays and onlays offer an alternative to fillings and crowns when it comes to repairing a tooth damaged by decay, injury, or simple wear and tear. Our team here at Diamond Dental Care will be able to ascertain which is most suitable for you and your oral health, and lead you on your own unique patient journey.
An inlay performs a similar function to a filling in that it is designed to fill a hole or cavity in a tooth. They are designed to be used in situations where a simple filling isn’t enough – for example, if the extent of the damage is too large, or if a previous filling has failed.
Onlays are more similar in their function to crowns. Like crowns, they sit over the top of the cusp of the tooth like a cap, and can restore a tooth that has received damage to this upper, visible part of the tooth to full function. They are a slightly less invasive option than a crown and are therefore sometimes more attractive and beneficial to the patient in the long-term.
Both inlays and onlays require more than one appointment to be applied, as they are bespoke and have to be made for you in a dental laboratory before we place them. We’ll take digital scans of the mouth at your first appointment – no need for messy impressions – and once your inlay or onlay has been made for you, you’ll return to have it placed.
Inlays and onlays can fit in practically seamlessly with the rest of the mouth, so there’s no need to worry about how the finished product will look when you smile.
