Fillings are used to help repair a tooth that has developed a hole or cavity (or caries), usually due to rot/decay or damage of some kind.
We’ll recommend a filling when one is needed to repair a tooth that has become damaged – usually because of tooth decay that has gone untreated, general wear and tear, or possibly an injury. It’s important to treat such damage as soon as possible as, if left untreated, cavities can enlarge leading to further damage and the need for more intervention.
In some cases, we might diagnose the need for a filling without any symptoms being present. However, pain when chewing or biting down, and increased sensitivity could mean that you’re in need of a filling and we’d advise booking an appointment with us as soon as possible. If you are in severe pain, we also offer emergency treatment.
Traditionally, fillings have been made of a metal amalgam material that is silver in appearance. Modern developments mean we’re now able to use composite resin to fill gaps and cavities in the teeth – these are white in appearance and fit in much more naturally with the rest of the teeth.
Fillings can usually be placed in just one appointment. We’ll administer local anaesthetic first (with numbing gel), so you don’t feel anything at the area being treated and are comfortable throughout. During the treatment, we can either talk you through everything we’re doing, or some patients prefer to listen to music or a podcast through their headphones to help keep them distracted and calm.
No – thanks to local anaesthetic, you won’t feel anything at the site of the treatment.
