Bridges are designed to bridge a gap in the mouth – usually created by the loss of a tooth or teeth. Closing these gaps is important to the overall oral wellbeing of the patient, as missing teeth can generate further oral health issues. Gaps can also cause a gap in confidence, which a bridge can also address.
Bridges are made up of a prosthetic tooth or teeth – depending on how many are in need of replacement – and a support structure to hold them in place either side. In most cases, this support structure is a crown that is placed on the anchor teeth either side of the gap. In some cases, however, we might use a metal or porcelain wing to support the prosthetic teeth – these will then be attached to the back of the adjacent natural teeth.
When it comes to missing teeth, we always recommend replacement wherever possible. Our team prioritises and promotes preventive care at every stage of the treatment journey, and replacement and restorations can help prevent further issues from developing as a result of missing teeth. This includes immediate issues such as difficulty eating and speaking and confidence in your smile, as well as future issues such as loss of bone density and misalignment of the remaining teeth.
Bridges are usually placed in two stages. We’ll first take a scan of the mouth using an iTero machine – no need for messy, uncomfortable impressions here! This is what will be sent off to the dental laboratory so that your bridge can be made specifically for you. When this is ready, you’ll come back to the practice where we’ll place the bridge for you.
